The Fragile Blade is a project which considers how we can relate to our bodies. This project began during my practice as a studio photographer, where I portrayed performers: dancers, artists, and members of the kink and fetish scene.

Photography is deeply connected to memory, to how we remember the past. Rather than using the photographic medium to record and document past events for their preservation, I am interested in using photography as a medium to explore how we can play with memory, symbols, and traces of our (traumatic) past to imagine new realities - within them unconventionally beautiful ways of relating to each other and to ourselves.

This project focuses on the body, a heavily contested topic. From the increasing number of laws which seek to restrict and regulate trans bodies, to the chipping away of reproductive freedoms and the criminalization of sex work, to the disposability of bodies in the violence of war, we are confronted by efforts to control our bodies and deny us our autonomy.

There is something terrifying about the body that resists categorization, cannot be placed neatly into binary systems, refuses to be used merely as a means to an end, is erotically rich and does not deny its sexuality. Such bodies may reflect back to us the limits of our own understanding of reality. They move towards, rather than away from, the pleasure inherent in pain.

Art forms such as dance and drama and transgressive sexual practices such as BDSM are integral to my work. These are all aesthetic experiences which can bring us to a certain edge, where we may cross into a zone beyond time and space, a brief yet transformative encounter with what is raw in our humanity.
